Red and white all over
Today
I received in the mail a notice telling me that I am about to become a
Canadian citizen in a few weeks. I doubt that I got any questions wrong
in the citizenship exam that I took a few months ago, but there were
two questions that you absolutely had to get right or else fail the
whole test, and I was worried that I had accidentally filled in a wrong
circle in the answer form.
The citizenship exam is supposed to measure that the applicant understands Canadian life and is fluent in either one of the two official languages. The multiple choice questions of the exam were so trivial that any person who speaks the language would have to be almost retarded to fail that test. The two questions that one had to get right were about the political system of Canada, and I guess that their answers would be surprising to somebody who comes from a Third World dictatorship.
After the ceremony where the next batch of new Canadians swears the oath of citizenship, I wonder if I should go and ask the judge the directions to the nearest welfare office. That sure would make a great impression. I will still be keeping my Finnish citizenship, since there is no point going through the trouble of giving it up, but at the next Canada day BBBBQ, I can dress up in red and white like the best of them. Also the Gulf Stream can now slow down and freeze the Nordic countries to Yukon-, NWT- or Nunavut-style (notice how I had to study the Canadian geography for the exam) temperatures more appropriate for those latitudes, since at least I will be safe. Phew!

Erinomaista, että säilytät kaksoiskansalaisuutesi, kuten suurin osa länsimaisista erikoisasiantuntijoista nykyisin.
Se edesauttaa länsimaisen kulttuurin jatkuvuuutta muuttuvissa olosuhteissa. Enkä tunne menttäväni lastani kokonaan pois...
