Knights and knaves

In the satirical movie "15 Minutes", two Russian thugs come to America to go on a killing spree, with the idea of pleading not guilty due to insanity and then becoming rich on the talkshow circuit. The plan is foiled by the fact that the second thug videotapes the crimes, and happened to film the part where the first thug explains the plan.

But then I had to wonder: how exactly does such confession establish that the person saying it is not insane in the criminal sense?
