I'm dreaming of a green Christmas
The winter will officially end here in a few days. Weatherwise, this winter was pretty great. No, scratch that, it was superb,
since most days the ground was completely snowfree, and we didn't get a
single extreme cold day where the temperature had dipped below -20C or
so. I can't even remember that we would have had a day with the
temperature going below -10C at noon: the nights may have been colder,
but since I'm sleeping in my warm bed then, who cares. If I have
understood correctly, the ground being free of snow is a
self-perpetuating phenomenon when the sunlight doesn't get reflected
from the white snow but gets absorbed to the ground, warming it up.
I am also very delighted about the fact that I didn't see even one article complaining about the economy of the city will be hurt and unemployment will rise because the snow plowers didn't have any work to do.
For the next few days, the weather report predicts temperature around zero and sun. Of course, as I have learned in my life, there will always be one more snow day than what you would expect. I can only envy the people who live further south and don't have to tolerate snow at all, but I heard that you get some other annoying weather phenomena.

If there had been significant amounts of snow, the news would have carried stories about how the overtime pay for snow plow operators was straining municipal budgets.
It's similar to the effects of weather on Christmas retail spending. If December's unusually cold and snowy, the retailers complain that sales were below expectations because people couldn't get out to shop. If December's unusually warm and snow-free, the retailers complain that sales were below expectations because people weren't in the Christmas spirit.

In Anchorage, Alaska, they keep plowing even when it hasn't snowed for days. All this does is make things worse, because they're just exposing all the ice that the snow had previously covered up. Argh.
