True crime
Perhaps in a hundred years or so, somebody will make a hit musical of the two old ladies depicted in the post "Arsenic and Old Delta 88s" at "Protein Wisdom".
I once read a Judge Dredd comic that had essentially the same plot,
except that instead of life insurance payments the murderers kept
collecting the monthly welfare cheques of their dispatched boarders.
And instead of running their victims over with a car, dropped them
through a trapdoor to the basement where a hungry monster ate them.
Crime takes no holiday even in the blogosphere. I noticed that one of our favourite feminist nutjobs has been "raped". Horrible, I know. However, based on my familiarity with the leftist way of thinking and the fact that the story provides no physical description of this organized gang of three knifepoint rapists, I am now going to make a wild guess that the rapists were not three upper class white boys of the rugby team of some posh university.
While we are at the topic of mental illness, I have always find it strange that Tom Cruise gets such crap for rejecting psychiatry and the whole notion of mental illness, even though his views on this topic are essentially identical to those of libertarians who get a free pass for them. See, for example, the essay "The Economics of Szasz: Preferences, Constraints, and Mental Illness" (Word document) by Bryan Caplan of EconLog, suggested to me by one recent commenter.
As I was reading news from the old country, I noticed that some taekwondo coach over there has been charged with 799 sexual offenses against his female students. The case adds up to twelve separate victims and 22 charges including rape and child abuse, which in this case probably simply means sex with a person under 16. I don't know what is going on here but remember that jocks can be violent, so there can be something here. But I would still be curious to hear how they ended up with the exact figure of 799 sexual offenses, since that would make about 65 offenses per victim. Somebody must have done some serious bookkeeping, since my memory would not stretch to remember and tally 65 separate incidents. If I was sexually abused, I would probably lose the count around the twentieth time or so. The accused man claims that all this sex was consensual, so we'll see what happens. There might also be something between the lines that I am missing, so if my Finnish readers know any more details, please enlighten me.

You know, I'm not that sure that the mentioned feminist nutjob has been raped. I apologize if I'm wrong, but the story sounds like she decided that it would be nice if she had more reasons to hate a) men b) authorities and c) the world. After all, how can you really be a convincing hardcore world-hating feminist if you haven't been raped and the patriarchy didn't care?

Szasz doesn't actually reject psychiatry if people voluntarily decide it is to their benefit. Tom Cruise thinks its a conspiracy on the part of the Dark Lord Xenu to prevent our thetans from escaping, or something like that.
Caplan's view seems to be that people aren't actually "ill" they would just rather take drugs and/or delude themselves into believing they are more important than they actually are than contribute to society. So instead of mental institutions, I think his reccomendation would be for such people to be sent to prison or told at gunpoint* "Stop acting crazy!".
*That's actually part of his criteria for determining whether or not someone has control over their condition. It won't work for cancer or paralysis, but it probably will for sociopathy.

That was actually also my first thought, since being raped is such an easy and excellent way to gain feminist cred. I gave it up after a short consideration, though. It is not quite Christmas yet.
But I think that I will still stick to my guess about the composition of the organized knifepoint rapist gang.
