They shoot horses, don't they?
Back
in the seventies, one infamous reporter of a Finnish tabloid posted a
personal ad for a young woman looking for help, wrote back to the
creepy men who replied (including one "doctor of bsychology", you see,
the lower-class Finns tend to have great difficulties with loan words
that use difficult letters such as b, d, g and x)
and sent these men a home address to meet "her". Of course, instead of
the girl, there was a photographer who took their picture to be shown
in the next issue of the magazine, along with their letters. Later, the
American news magazine show Dateline has used the same method to nab
Internet pedophiles, to a comical effect and great ratings. However,
the fine line between what is ethical and what is not can be quickly
blurred and crossed and then some, as explained in the post "The Seattle Craigslist sex scandal" at Boing Boing,
since as far I as I can tell, in this case the men who replied haven't
done anything wrong, unless we subscribe to the radical feminist idea
that a heterosexual man desiring to have sex with women is itself wrong.
In these enlightened times, we are all brothers, and the doors of all institutions are pretty much open to everybody, so that applicants are filtered based on merit so that this process is blind to sex and colour and other such traits so that every person is judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin, as it should be. However, there are still some reactionary holdouts who angrily disagree with this idea, as Dennis Mangan reports in his post "Sauce for the Goose". And speaking of middle-aged guys who share their wisdom with us young whippersnappers, there is also the Washington Post column "If You Want My Advice..."
Of course, not all diversity is wonderful or desirable, even in the chromosomal level. For example, the Prader-Willi syndrome, whose eradication would be the humanitarian act of the century. The post "Why would the world's fattest man need surgery to lose weight?" by Ann Althouse quotes a comment that should add a whole another layer of meaning to the claims of the so-called "fat acceptance" movement that claims that there is no such thing as "too fat".
In the news from the old country, I can see that a bunch of leftists and green had been demonstrating and rioting against the ASEM conference in Helsinki, and the undemocratic jackbooted thugs of Finnish police arrested many of them. In his latest essay, Jussi Halla-Aho brings us two photos of the participants that he took, noting that he saw many people wearing scarves to cover their faces, but then again, it was a chilly and windy autumn day. These people sure look quite a lot like the people who are often depicted at Zombietime. Somebody else linked to the video "Smash Asem" posted on YouTube. As "brutal" as the Finnish riot police are against these brave dissidents, I wonder how they would compare to their colleagues in socialist countries that these rioters want to establish.
I just realized that YouTube, while it exists, can be used by yours truly to find videos about the places where I lived before. The video "hml" is an artistic wintery nighttime ride in the downtown of the town where I grew up in. Sure, it's not quite "Collateral", but it certainly brings back memories, as soon as I am able to mentally orient myself and realize where each shot is taken.
In the post "Horses", the proprietor of "Anal Philosopher" asks something that I have also occasionally wondered, namely why it is acceptable to mass slaughter cows for human consumption, but doing the same for horses is wrong.
In other news today, we can hear that the price of oil has been going down for the past few days. Since Monday is always Kunstler day, the new post "Jack and Jihad" presents his opinion about the cause of this decline, and the new "Jack" deep water oil field. For a different point of view, the post "The Efficiency Paradox" at "Chicago Boyz" asks why increased energy efficiency increases the use of said energy, instead of decreasing it.
We sophisticated Europeans occasionally wonder why the Americans are so strict towards onscreen nudity, as opposed to gratuituous violence. The post "Sex/Violence/Ratings" at "Two Blowhards" reminds us once again that incentives matter, and that when you are in doubt, just follow the money.

This is kind of question that I'm sure every pet owner over the age of 12 has entertained. Even autistic libertarians should be able to figure out that the world is made up of many cultures: cows are sacred to Subcontinental Hindus, dogs are sacred to the rapidly diminishing tribe of the indigenous English and horses are sacred to ppl like Tony Soprano. I really can't understand the attempt to reduce the whole of human existence to questions of reason and logic.
