A too-powerful image from the riots

Posted by – August 15, 2011

I don’t know which struck me more – this image from a mugging said to have occurred during the recent riots in England, or the description given by the Daily Mail (sometimes nicknamed “Daily Heil” for being scandalous and right-wing):

The taller, broader man already holds a pair of white and green trainers and a white T-shirt in his hands. Now, it seems, he wants the trousers too.

I clicked on the link and was shocked by the quality of the Daily Mail’s journalism. Right in the sidebar there were links to topless pictures of Heidi Klum. Sure, she’s saggy and old now, but, still, North American news outlets have a lot to learn. I’m not completely oblivious to European culture: I like soccerball and watch the occasional foreign film, and I’ve studied a great deal of European literature. But sometimes it’s like you people live in a different world, which is at least occasionally a wonderland filled with images of topless German models.

Yeah, the Daily Mail really is terrible. Now that News of the Screws is gone, I wouldn’t be surprised if it moved in that direction to capture some of that market.

Apropos Heidi Klum, if you want to read something really funny, google Klum / Seal -threads at stormfront.org.

And if you’re wondering why “funny”, I’m probably having an after-reaction to when I was mentioned there in the context of my dad’s movie which had a mixed-race couple.
